
Google has issued a warning about a significant security issue affecting more than one billion Android smartphones worldwide. These devices, which are no longer receiving crucial security updates, face increased vulnerability to cyber threats as a result.

According to Google, smartphones operating on older versions of the Android operating system are no longer part of its security support cycle. Devices lacking regular security patches become prime targets for cybercriminals, who can exploit known vulnerabilities to steal personal information, gain control of devices for botnets, or distribute malware like ransomware for financial gain.
Particularly at risk are Android phones released in 2021 or earlier. Although Android 13 is currently installed on approximately 57.6% of active devices, many users are still on outdated software. Alarmingly, around 7.26% of smartphones continue to run Android 10, which is no longer fully supported by Google's security infrastructure.
Though some applications may still function on these older Android versions, Google cautions that security cannot be guaranteed. For instance, while apps such as Google Maps can operate, the encryption and secure transmission of data may not be reliable.
Google clarified that its Play Protect service provides a basic level of protection for devices running Android 9 and later, but it cannot replace essential system-level security patches. As a result, Play Protect alone is inadequate against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities.
In light of these issues, Google is advising users to upgrade to newer smartphones and to choose manufacturers that commit to long-term operating system and security updates. Brands like Samsung and Google's Pixel line offer models with guarantees of up to six years of operating system updates and as many as eight years of security patches.
The uptake of Google's latest Android 16 operating system remains low, with only about 6.5% of devices currently using it, as the majority are still reliant on older versions.
Additionally, industry insiders speculate that Google may be planning a significant change in its operating system strategy, potentially merging Chrome OS—used on tablets and PCs—with future Android versions. This unified platform, referred to as Aluminum OS, is expected to enhance productivity, streamline development workflows, and provide a consistent experience across smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
