Review of the OnePlus 15R Smartphone

The design of the OnePlus 15R is striking, showcasing a sleek profile and subtle camera layout with two rear cameras, unlike the bulkier designs of previous models. It is available in Charcoal Black and Mint Green, the latter of which received mixed reviews from users. Although the sleek design is appealing, some issues stand out. The texture of the OnePlus logo on the back feels slightly greasy, and the device tends to attract dust, which is frustrating, especially as it arrived covered in dust straight out of the box.

OnePlus continues to include a cable and a 55W SUPERVOOC charger with the device, which can support up to 80W charging. However, users have found that charging doesn't reach 100% in 15 minutes but averages about 1% per minute during standard use.

The OnePlus 15R is equipped with a substantial 7400 mAh battery, even larger than that of the OnePlus 15. During heavy usage, such as at The Game Awards, the battery performed impressively, allowing users to maintain a charge over extended periods without needing to plug in.

Daily activities, including calling, emailing, texting, and gaming, showed that the battery could withstand intensive use without significant depletion. A battery test conducted while playing Fortnite revealed only a 10% battery loss after an hour of gaming, suggesting a potential battery life of up to 10 hours during gaming sessions.

Gaming performance is facilitated by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, complemented by a 360-degree Cryo Velocity Cooling System that prevents overheating, a notable improvement over the previous model. The device maintains stable gameplay between 40 and 60 FPS, even during heavy gaming moments.

The 6.83-inch LTPS AMOLED display, which boasts a resolution of 2800×1272 and a peak brightness of 1800 nits, enhances users' media consumption and gaming experiences. The maximum refresh rate of 165Hz offers a competitive edge over many other devices in the market. However, curved corners on the screen can sometimes interfere with gameplay by cutting off parts of the user interface.

In terms of storage, the OnePlus 15R offers 12GB of RAM and options for 256GB or 512GB of storage. Though it lags behind the flagship's 16GB of RAM, users can still expect solid performance during everyday tasks and gaming. AI features within the camera app remain consistent with previous models, with the AI Eraser and AI Reflection Eraser being of particular note.

Camera capabilities differ slightly from the flagship, featuring a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultrawide lens without a dedicated telephoto lens—a reduction that may disappoint some users. While the main camera produces decent standard photos, it struggles in low-light conditions and has issues with color accuracy, particularly in darker skin tones. A lack of telephoto capability may hinder photo quality, especially for distant subjects, leading to distorted images.

The front camera has seen an upgrade to 32MP, which improves selfie quality. However, low-light performance remains a challenge, although daytime detail is captured effectively.

Video recording capabilities include 4K and 1080p options at various frame rates as well as slow-motion options, which add further versatility for users.

Pricing for the OnePlus 15R is set at $699 for the 256GB model and $799 for the 512GB model, presenting a $100 increase from the OnePlus 13R. While the specifications closely resemble those of the OnePlus 15, the pricing reflects the minor differences, making it a reasonable choice for those who don't need additional features found in the flagship model.
