Qualcomm Launches New Snapdragon Chipsets for Premium Smartphones

Qualcomm Technologies has introduced two new mobile processors: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. This expansion aims to enhance its flagship chip portfolio with an emphasis on on-device AI capabilities. The release reflects a strategic shift for Qualcomm, as both chipsets are designed for different tiers of the premium smartphone market while sharing a common architectural base.

Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, described the launch as a pivotal moment for the company. He stated, "As the agentic AI age evolves, our multi-flagship strategy allows us to push the boundaries of what’s possible for mobile while bringing our latest AI innovations to a broader range of premium devices."

Both platforms leverage what Qualcomm terms "agentic AI," enabling AI agents to function directly on devices instead of relying on cloud processing. This approach is intended to provide users with a more personalized and anticipatory experience.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is positioned as the premier option in Qualcomm’s lineup, aimed at powering the next generation of flagship Android smartphones.

In terms of gaming, both processors feature Adreno Neural Fusion, an AI-driven technology designed to enhance graphics rendering. This innovation aims to improve visual quality and extend gaming sessions through machine learning applications.

Camera capabilities include support for Advanced Professional Video (APV) and Intelligent Pixel Control, which enhance scene analysis and image quality for both photos and videos.

Both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are built on a 2nm process node, incorporating the Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a rearchitected Adreno GPU, and the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. This architecture enables the standard Elite Gen 6 to offer many of the same advanced features as its Extreme counterpart.

Smartphone manufacturers, including HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi, have committed to incorporating these chipsets into their upcoming flagship devices. Notably, Motorola has announced that it will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 in its forthcoming Signature 27 handset.

Qualcomm has indicated that devices featuring these new chipsets will be available in Australia through various OEM partners, though specific launch dates and pricing have yet to be confirmed.
