Following ratings and reviews, detailed product descriptions are considered important by 52% of respondents, while discounts or deals impact 49% of consumers' decisions. Julie Geller, principal research director at Info-Tech Research Group, emphasized the importance of useful product descriptions and accessible reviews in reducing uncertainty for consumers, especially as AI technologies play a growing role in searching for and recommending products.
The survey findings also highlighted that misleading product information can severely damage brand trust. Four out of five consumers reported that poor online descriptions lead them to think less of a brand, an increase from 75% in the previous year's study. Geller noted that inaccuracies can prompt doubts regarding a brand’s overall reliability, exacerbated by the rapid spread of negative perceptions on reviews and social media.
Furthermore, Geller explained that inaccurate product information can adversely affect sales, resulting in unnecessary returns and higher customer service demands. In contrast, companies that provide accurate product content foster greater customer loyalty, with 75% of consumers indicating they are more likely to repurchase from brands that present accurate information. Among them, 25% stated they are much more inclined to return to such brands.
Geller also pointed out that effective product content facilitates smoother customer experiences online, stating that every instance in which a customer is required to seek external verification disrupts the purchasing process. Accurate and well-organized product information enhances consumer trust in a brand’s expertise.
