The Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor College of Medicine’s Center for Space Medicine has announced a Request for Information (RFI) aimed at enhancing the scientific value of its collection of biospecimens gathered from commercial spaceflights. Jimmy Wu, deputy director and chief engineer at TRISH, emphasized the rarity and significance of these biospecimens for the space health community. With commercial space travel expanding beyond government astronaut programs, the research aims to investigate the health impacts of spaceflight on varied populations. This RFI is designed to ensure that analyses of these limited resources yield significant scientific insights and address crucial questions regarding human adaptation to spaceflight.

Biospecimens are inherently finite, making strategic analysis crucial. TRISH is calling for input on genomic, transcriptomic, and other molecular analyses that could be most beneficial for understanding spaceflight-related health risks and guiding future missions. The available biospecimens include samples collected before and after flights from participants of missions such as Axiom-2, Axiom-3, Axiom-4, Fram2, and Polaris Dawn. As the samples originate from private astronauts, they offer a unique perspective on the biological effects of space travel.

In addition to biological samples, the EXPAND program's repository contains an array of physiological, behavioral, and environmental data, including cognitive assessments, wearable sensor measurements, and sleep surveys. Such datasets open avenues for comprehensive analyses that may yield new understandings of human responses to spaceflight.

Responses to this RFI will guide future investments in molecular data generation, ensuring that the resulting datasets provide optimal benefits for researchers studying human health and performance in space. Interested researchers can submit their responses by September 8, 2026.

Launched in 2021, the EXPAND program collaborates with commercial spaceflight providers to collect health and performance data throughout all flight phases, maintaining a centralized repository for future scientific studies.
