Overview of New Features in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27

Apple has launched its latest operating systems for iPhones and iPads, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Although this update may not introduce dramatic changes like the previous Liquid Glass redesign, it includes substantial upgrades aimed at enhancing stability and daily usability.

As of September 14, 2026, both iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 are being rolled out. Older devices have been mostly retained in this update. iPhones from 2019 and later, specifically the iPhone 11 and newer models, including the iPhone SE (2nd Gen), are compatible with iOS 27, as are any iPhones that previously received iOS 26. For iPads, the compatibility varies; models from 9th generation onward are supported, while the 8th-gen iPad and the 5th-gen iPad Mini are excluded from the iPadOS 27 update.

To install iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, users should back up their devices first via Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, followed by the software update option. The new Siri AI is a major addition, featuring an improved design that resembles a glass orb and capabilities such as contextual understanding of user requests and aiding in tasks like dividing a restaurant bill using the camera.

Stability improvements include up to 30% faster app launches and 80% faster AirDrop transfers. Users can now adjust the Liquid Glass effect via a slider to a level that suits their preferences. Additionally, new child safety features allow parents to manage app access and filter content, making it simpler to set boundaries for their children's device use.

In the Photos app, AI enhancements include a feature called Clean Up for removing unwanted objects and Extend for expanding images, which utilizes machine learning to fill in gaps. The new Image Playground app offers advanced capabilities for creating high-quality images.

Improvements have also been made in customization options within the Shortcuts app, allowing users to create automated tasks using natural language. Safari now organizes tabs by topics and introduces custom extensions.

Several smaller updates include improved search functionalities in Apple Mail, enhancements in the Health and Home apps, and better synchronization for messages across devices. Apple continues to focus on user experience with these iterative changes in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.
