This development comes after Samsung's notable battery issues with the Galaxy Note 7 in 2016, which faced recalls due to battery failures. Since then, Samsung has focused heavily on improving battery safety. As it introduces silicon-carbon technology, the company aims to highlight the safety and reliability of these new batteries, which are designed for their foldable phones.

Silicon-carbon technology replaces graphite in the negative electrode with silicon-carbon, resulting in higher energy density and faster charging times. This innovation allows Samsung to fit a 5,000mAh battery into the Z Fold 8 Ultra without increasing its thickness, in fact, it’s 0.1mm thinner when unfolded than its predecessor.

At a recent briefing ahead of the July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event in London, Samsung executives provided insights into the chemistry and design of the new batteries. Samsung Executive Vice President Moon Sung-hoon emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating, "With Samsung's highest standards, we carefully verified the silicon-carbon battery so that our users can trust it and use it with competence."

While specific details on the composition of the silicon-carbon batteries were not disclosed, Samsung confirmed that all new Galaxy Z series phones will incorporate this technology. The company explained its innovations in battery construction, such as integrating a micro-carbon coating on the anode layer for improved performance and stability, and injecting additional atoms into the cathode layer to manage voltage.

Samsung’s advancements in battery design include a solid electrolyte interface and a hyperporosity separator, which enhances stability without compromising the battery's structural integrity. These improvements offer users larger-capacity batteries in smaller devices that also charge more quickly, potentially leading to a positive reception among owners of the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.
