Apple has introduced a replaceable nano-texture cover layer for its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. This design addresses durability concerns, allowing users to replace the cover for USD$19 (AUD$29) if it sustains wear over time. The iPhone Duo, which starts at AUD$3,499 for the 256GB model, is set for pre-orders beginning on Friday, 16 October 2026, at 11 p.m. AEDT.

The 7.6-inch flexible display features a special cover layer that minimizes crease visibility and glare, enhancing overall display quality. Unlike competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel Fold, which use permanent screen protectors, this removable layer allows users to maintain the device's appearance without risking damage to the underlying screen.

Kate Bergeron, Apple's Vice President of Hardware Engineering, emphasized the module's utility, stating, "It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one." The engineering team dedicated significant resources to ensure the layer's longevity under daily use.

While the cover is designed to be replaced, customers will need to visit an Apple Store for professional application. AppleCare+ is available for AUD$14.49 per month or AUD$144.99 annually, which offers reduced service fees for repairs. Replacement costs for AppleCare+ members include AUD$29 for the cover layer, AUD$149 for inner display damage, and AUD$45 for front or back glass damage. Battery servicing is complimentary if the capacity falls below 80 percent.

The iPhone Duo is priced between AUD$3,499 for the base model and AUD$5,899 for the 2TB variant. After the pre-order date, the smartphone will be available in Apple Stores starting 23 October 2026.
