NASA's SpaceX Crew-12 astronauts have safely returned to Earth after more than seven months aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Their spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles on Thursday, concluding a mission that saw them spend 237 days in orbit and travel over 100 million miles.

The crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, completed over 3,792 trips around Earth while conducting scientific experiments intended to support future missions to the Moon and Mars.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted the astronauts' remarkable contributions and the dedication of many across NASA and SpaceX. "Building the capability, experience, and confidence to do this repeatedly is exactly what will allow us to go farther," he said.

The spacecraft touched down at 8:34 a.m. PDT, and SpaceX recovery teams quickly reached the capsule to bring the astronauts aboard their specialized vessels. Following standard medical evaluations, the crew will be transported to shore and then to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Dana Weigel, manager of NASA's Low Earth Orbit Program, emphasized the significance of the mission, stating, "NASA's activities supporting the ISS enable the science, engineering, and risk-reduction needed for future missions across the solar system."

During their mission, Crew-12 performed essential research, including a project on producing stem cells in space for future medical treatments, and a study initiating the production of IV fluids on demand. Other investigations explored the impact of pneumonia-causing bacteria on cardiovascular health and analyzed nutrition in space and its influence on blood flow.

These studies aim to improve astronaut health during extended missions and contribute to future exploration endeavors.

The mission also featured notable achievements in spacewalks, with Meir completing four, raising her total to seven and ranking her among the top NASA women for career spacewalks. Adenot made history as the first French woman to perform a spacewalk, completing three during the mission.

With Crew-12's return, NASA marks another successful mission that blends scientific research with international cooperation and human spaceflight expertise, providing valuable insights for journeys beyond Earth.
