Students from the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Exactas e Ingenierías (CUCEI) are designing a prototype "Rover" aimed at participating in the University Rover Challenge, an international competition taking place in the Utah desert, United States, at the end of May. Cosette Nahui-Ollin, a Food and Biotechnology Engineering student at CUCEI and member of UdeG Space, explained that the competition brings together students globally to create prototype vehicles for Mars. The challenge includes four missions: Laboratory, Robotic Arm, Stream, and Autonomy, which assess the vehicle's capabilities and its potential contributions to actual future missions to Mars.

Luis Fernando Arellano Zaragoza, a Communications and Electronics Engineering student, noted that their Rover features six wheels and a flexible chassis designed to accommodate various devices essential for the competition tasks. The first mission involves a Laboratory phase where the vehicle will utilize a drill to collect materials for on-site analysis in the search for signs of microscopic life.

In the Robotic Arm mission, competitors must remotely control the Rover's robotic arm to perform tasks such as retrieving tools and manipulating objects weighing up to five kilograms. The Stream mission will evaluate the Rover’s ability to navigate diverse terrains, with Mechanical Engineering students tasked with optimizing its suspension and chassis for better performance.

For the Autonomy mission, the vehicle will autonomously scan QR codes and navigate difficult terrain to determine the best route without human input.

Jorge Luis Madrid, a graduate in Robotics Engineering, emphasized the importance of pioneering space exploration initiatives within academia. He views space robotics as a promising field, believing that the technologies developed by students in Mexico could significantly impact future space exploration. Madrid expressed that it is every aerospace engineer's dream to see their work launched into space.
