
OpenAI has purchased the smartphone imaging startup Glass Imaging Inc. for more than $300 million, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on September 14. Both companies have yet to confirm the acquisition, which is seen as part of OpenAI's strategy to expand into consumer hardware.

Glass Imaging specializes in AI-driven image processing technology aimed at overcoming the limitations of smartphone cameras. The acquisition comes as OpenAI collaborates with renowned designer Jony Ive, a former Apple executive, to develop new consumer devices.
Ive has a history of leading the design of iconic Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Since Fall 2023, he and his firm, LoveFrom, have been working with OpenAI on AI devices. In 2024, Ive co-founded io Products Inc. with three partners, and OpenAI formally entered the consumer hardware market by acquiring io Products for $6.5 billion in an all-stock deal completed in July 2022. Following that acquisition, 55 employees, including former Apple staff, joined OpenAI.
While no new device has been officially announced, Bloomberg reported last month that OpenAI and Ive are developing a screenless smart speaker shaped like a donut, with a proposed price ranging from $300 to $400. The industry is reviewing OpenAI’s acquisition of AI camera technology closely.
If AI agents are integrated into smartphones and other personal devices, cameras can function as critical sensors for AI to interpret the physical world. Current smart glasses, for example, utilize cameras to help AI recognize and analyze various objects.
Founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, Glass Imaging has raised $30 million in funding and was valued at $100 million during a funding round last year. The acquisition reflects a threefold increase in the company’s valuation.
Co-founders Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both former Apple engineers, played significant roles in the development of Apple's Portrait Mode, which creates a blurred background effect known as bokeh. This technology distinguishes subjects from their backgrounds in photos. Glass Imaging’s AI capabilities push the boundaries of computational photography, enhancing images taken with smaller sensors and lenses to approach the quality of larger DSLR cameras.
Glass Imaging’s foremost technology, GlassAI, processes RAW data utilizing a neural network that adapts to the specific characteristics of different camera systems. Unlike traditional image processors that operate in multiple stages, GlassAI employs an end-to-end neural network that simultaneously interprets and enhances images while accounting for the unique optical features of each smartphone's camera.
The technology is particularly beneficial for zoom functionality. For instance, the Honor 600 smartphone employs a 200-megapixel camera and uses GlassAI to achieve zoom capabilities without a telephoto lens. This system combines smaller pixels into larger superpixels for photography while also compensating for challenges posed by optical limitations, noise, and blur. Unlike conventional approaches that may result in loss of detail, GlassAI is trained to recover information lost during the imaging process, thus enhancing the quality of zoomed images in compact devices.
