New Siri Capabilities in iOS 27: Access to Personal Data and Enhanced Functionality

iOS 27 introduces significant enhancements to Siri, an upgrade initially revealed at WWDC 2024. The updated Siri now can utilize personal data from messages, emails, photos, and other sources to provide contextually relevant responses. For instance, users can ask Siri to help find movie tickets discussed by friends. However, Apple assures users that their emails and texts remain secure, as Siri does not have access to read them.

The new Siri relies on on-device AI models to handle requests whenever possible. When more complex queries arise, Siri may use Apple's Private Cloud Compute for additional processing. To access these new features, users must update to iOS 27 by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Availability is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, and users can opt into the beta by selecting "Try Siri AI (Beta)" in the Siri settings.

Siri's interaction with personal data involves transparency; when providing answers requiring personal context, Siri indicates its sources, such as messages or emails. Most processing occurs on the device to protect user privacy. Apple claims no personal information is retained during cloud processing, even offering a $1 million bug bounty for external verification of this policy.

Siri's improved capabilities allow for comprehensive searches executed primarily on-device, relying on integrated functionalities like the Spotlight index and App Toolbox. Users can even export reports of their interactions with the Private Cloud Compute by navigating to Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report.

In addition to standard voice commands, Siri in iOS 27 can handle more nuanced tasks. Users can invoke Siri using the side button or by swiping down from the home screen to type questions. Apple has also introduced a standalone Siri app to revisit past conversations. Users can ask questions about visual content displayed on their screens, like identifying objects or extracting information from images.

Furthermore, Siri functions within the iPhone camera. By launching the camera app and entering Siri mode, users can leverage Visual Intelligence to inquire about surroundings, such as estimating the nutritional value of food items. On-device AI allows for faster responses, while more complex queries can utilize Private Cloud Compute for enhanced processing power without compromising user privacy.
