The agreement allows ispace-EUROPE to utilize ALTEC's facilities for simulating rover platform operations in lunar analogue environments. The collaboration will encompass functional testing of lunar rover platforms, mission simulations, and comprehensive training for ispace-EUROPE’s mission operations team. It will also explore potential cooperation in lunar exploration technologies and space resource utilization.
ALTEC, based in Turin, Italy, is a public-private partnership with Thales Alenia Space and the Italian Space Agency. It operates the Rover Operations Control Centre for ESA’s ExoMars Rosalind Franklin mission and is developing a new Lunar Simulation Centre with support from the Italian Space Agency. This new facility aims to strengthen Italy’s role in planetary exploration and will provide capabilities for testing robotic lunar missions.
Julien-Alexandre Lamamy, CEO of ispace-EUROPE, emphasized the importance of testing and training in analogue environments for successful lunar operations. He noted that the collaboration combines ispace-EUROPE's lunar rover expertise with ALTEC's advanced facilities.
Vincenzo Giorgio, CEO of ALTEC, highlighted the MoU as an opportunity to enhance ALTEC’s capabilities in support of lunar exploration and to further develop their new Lunar Simulation Centre. He expressed eagerness to see how the partnership could enhance the development of lunar rover technologies and contribute to a cohesive European lunar exploration ecosystem.
As lunar missions become more complex and frequent, the ability to perform realistic testing and validation of rover operations will be crucial, reinforcing the shared goal of both organizations to support safe and effective lunar surface operations.
