Djibouti Joins NASA’s Artemis Accords, Expanding African Participation

NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson remarked on the significance of Djibouti joining this coalition at a crucial time for space cooperation. Djibouti’s Ambassador to the United States, Mohamed Siad Douale, represented the country in signing the accords. Douale stated that by signing, Djibouti aims to strengthen its partnership with the United States and engage with a growing community committed to peaceful space exploration. He expressed optimism about opportunities in scientific research, satellite applications, education, and technical training.

Djibouti has recently launched its first satellites, Djibouti 1A in 2023 and Djibouti 1B in 2024, both aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

With Djibouti’s accession, Africa now has eight signatories to the Artemis Accords. Participation began in December 2022 with Nigeria and Rwanda, followed by Angola in 2023, and Senegal in 2025. The additional nations in 2026 include Morocco, Botswana, Mauritius, and now Djibouti.

The Artemis Accords provide a framework that encourages scientific contributions, technology demonstrations, and promotes interoperability, emergency assistance, and responsible resource use.

For African nations developing their space industries, the principles of the Artemis Accords could facilitate partnerships in technology and scientific education. Djibouti has already recognized potential opportunities in these areas for its students, researchers, and entrepreneurs.

As more African countries join the Artemis Accords, the continent is expected to gain a stronger collective presence in shaping future lunar exploration initiatives, with immediate benefits in cooperation and long-term potential for collaborative projects.
