At the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Md., Isaacman remarked, "You are witnessing a very energized NASA, and we will need to be as we are in the midst of a very real second space race."

The strategy is rooted in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to restore the capabilities essential for a sustained U.S. presence on the Moon and future missions to Mars. The Artemis I mission performed an uncrewed flight around the Moon, while Artemis II marked the first crewed mission for the program. Isaacman described Artemis II as a pivotal moment, declaring that it reinstated the United States in lunar astronaut missions. He termed the mission a success and a boost for the workforce.

Currently, NASA is preparing for Artemis III, slated for launch in 2027. Starting early that year, uncrewed robotic landers will travel to the lunar south pole nearly every month. These missions will focus on testing surface power systems, crew and autonomous mobility, and technologies necessary for future habitats.

Isaacman stated that NASA is working to standardize rockets, improve institutional knowledge, and eliminate bureaucratic hurdles to reduce delays between missions. The overall goal of the Artemis program is to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon by the mid-2030s and to develop technologies for deep-space exploration.

The lunar south pole is critical for these efforts, as it contains vital resources such as water ice and ample sunlight, which are essential for extended missions. Isaacman characterized this region as strategic, likening its importance to having limited suitable sites, similar to a congested area in a city. He noted that both China and Russia have their sights set on this region, with China planning to establish a lunar base and potentially a nuclear reactor there.

He pointed out that success in this competitive arena could have far-reaching implications, influencing international partnerships and the standards set for space exploration. Ultimately, Isaacman highlighted that the lunar south pole would serve as a testing ground for Mars exploration, allowing astronauts to refine their skills and technologies just three days away from Earth, underscoring the urgency to secure access to this vital training environment.
