
Intel has announced the release of its Core Series 3 mobile processors, codenamed "Wildcat Lake," aimed at budget and low-power computing markets. This launch marks a significant overhaul, as the Core Series 3 processors will replace the 15-watt U-series chips from Intel's 13th and 14th Gen Core families, filling a gap in Intel's product line that lacked both adequate pricing and power consumption options. While previous iterations relied on older technologies, Wildcat Lake leverages the latest architectures in a cost-effective design.
Intel's Core Series 3 features a streamlined architecture, consisting of a two-die solution—one for computing and graphics, and another for the platform controller. This design is housed in a traditional organic substrate, optimizing costs. Although specific die size and transistor count have not been disclosed, the chips are designed to be lightweight while employing an advanced 18A manufacturing process.
The Wildcat Lake architecture incorporates two Performance (P) cores and four low-power (E) cores, resulting in a configuration that aims to enhance single-threaded performance—but delivers limited multithreaded performance compared to higher-end models. The GPU features two Xe3 architecture cores, adequate for general desktop use but insufficient for gaming, lacking support for certain advanced features like ray tracing.
Additionally, the integrated neural processing unit (NPU) has been scaled back, with a peak performance of 17 TOPS, falling short of Microsoft's 40 TOPS requirement for Copilot+ functionality. Memory support is limited to a single channel (64-bit) bus for DDR5 and LPDDR5X, ultimately capping memory capacities at 48GB and 64GB, respectively.
Overall, Wildcat Lake is crafted for budget laptops, streamlining costs while maintaining access to Intel's latest technological capabilities.
