Ookla's report evaluates six popular foldable devices in the U.S.: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6, Fold7, Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, Flip6, and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The benchmarks were generated by testing these devices against their respective slab model counterparts, like the Galaxy S26 Ultra, for comparison.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra emerged as the leader in speed tests, excelling in download speed, upload speed, and packet-loss reduction. Notably, the base model, Galaxy Z Fold8, performed well too, achieving slightly better median download speeds than the Ultra, though it lagged in other speed metrics.

In terms of signal quality, the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra didn't perform as highly. Despite both utilizing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, the Galaxy S26 Ultra surpassed both foldable models in signal quality measurement tests. Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold6 achieved the highest scores in these tests under varying conditions, distinguishing itself from the others.

Interestingly, while the Galaxy Z Flip6 had the poorest signal quality in good conditions, it fared better under challenging conditions relative to its control device. Temperature benchmarks indicated that the Galaxy Z Fold7 operated the coolest among the tested models, whereas the Flip6 exhibited the highest temperature.

The report also tracks the progression of Samsung's foldable devices over generations, showing improvements in upload speeds, download speeds, and signal strength with each iteration. However, the Fold6 outperformed the Fold7 and Fold8 in signal strength during poor conditions. Moreover, the Fold8 Ultra and Fold8 showed a decline in performance regarding overheating-related throttling compared to the Fold7.

Market share data indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 remains the most popular foldable smartphone globally, controlling over 77 percent of the foldable market, despite competition from brands like Motorola, Google, and Honor. These dynamics may shift once the iPhone Duo is released.
