Despite the introduction of advanced artificial intelligence features in newer devices, many users are continuing to use their older smartphones. The report notes that a significant number of Android phones are aging out of support, with devices like the Google Pixel 6 family and Samsung Galaxy S22 series nearing the end of their usability.
The share of end-of-life (EOL) Android devices has reached a record high, as unsupported phones increase in number. According to StatCounter.com, only 56.7% of Android devices were running a supported operating system, such as Android 14 or later, by August 2026. This trend means that over 1.5 billion devices are at risk of exploitation due to unpatched security vulnerabilities.
While some users might perceive their older devices as functioning well, the report warns that these smartphones are at a significant risk for being compromised. Many known vulnerabilities can be exploited without user interaction or privileges, putting numerous devices in jeopardy.
For instance, support for the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will end on October 1, 2026. Similarly, several Samsung devices, including the popular Galaxy S22 series, will cease support within the coming months, with the Galaxy S22, S22+, and Ultra reaching their EOL on February 25, 2024.
In contrast, Apple devices generally enjoy longer support periods compared to Android, with older models like the iPhone 11 still receiving the latest updates. The report highlights Samsung as a leading brand in the Android market due to its extensive software and hardware support, featuring advanced AI integration and flagship models such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra and Z Fold 8.
