Google confirmed that communication with the satellite has been established, and initial operations are proceeding as planned. This project aims to expose Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to space-specific conditions, including radiation, launch forces, and the thermal environment of orbit, which are difficult to replicate on Earth. The company plans to gather operational data over the upcoming weeks.
Known as Project Suncatcher, this initiative serves as a preliminary test for a larger concept where satellites could eventually offer computing power for machine learning applications. Google envisions that future satellites could be interconnected via high-bandwidth laser links. The Transporter-18 mission successfully deployed a total of 130 payloads into orbit, including Google's experimental satellite.
