The company was established by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who are former Apple engineers known for their work on the iPhone’s Portrait Mode feature. At Glass Imaging, they utilized AI to overcome the physical limitations of smartphone camera hardware by employing neural networks tailored to individual camera systems, enhancing image quality at the time of capture rather than relying solely on post-processing.
OpenAI has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the acquisition. The company is speculated to be venturing into hardware development, which may include a smartphone, earbuds, and AI companion devices. This acquisition follows OpenAI’s earlier purchase of io, founded by CEO Sam Altman and Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion in 2025, as part of its initiative to expand into consumer hardware.
