Manufacturers of budget smartphones are facing significant cost pressures due to rising memory and storage chip prices. This surge has been attributed to the ongoing AI boom, which has affected the overall cost of materials and, subsequently, consumer prices. A report from tech research firm Omdia predicts a 22% decline in the sub-$400 smartphone market this year.

The analysis indicates that the memory shortage is having a detrimental effect on budget smartphones, with increasing RAM prices exacerbating the situation. Omdia noted, "Memory costs have become a serious burden for low-end smartphones." The report warns that, based on projected memory price trends, low-end smartphone models are nearing unprofitability and may experience a decline in demand as retail prices increase.

Currently, memory costs represent nearly 60% of the total manufacturing bill for smartphones priced under $400, and over 64% for those below $99. Omdia highlighted that global consumer tech brands, including prominent Chinese manufacturers like OPPO and Xiaomi, are under pressure to hike retail prices to maintain profit margins.

The supply chain issues are particularly burdensome for budget-conscious consumers. Unlike premium manufacturers, who can reduce production costs by opting for older processors or more affordable components, budget phone makers often operate on very slim margins, leaving little room for cost adjustments.

Overall, Omdia forecasts that the global smartphone market will contract by 12% this year, primarily due to a projected 22% drop in shipments of sub-$400 devices. In contrast, smartphones priced above $400 are expected to see a growth of 5.7% in shipments.

Furthermore, the escalating prices of RAM and NAND chips are largely driven by increased demand from AI-related data center developments, impacting costs throughout the electronics sector. Apple has recently raised the prices of many Mac and iPad models by up to $300, citing the unsustainable costs of memory shortages. While Apple has not yet increased iPhone prices this year, analysts anticipate a rise when new models are announced in the fall.
