The text message from AT&T reads: "Hi, it's AT&T. Action needed: An important Apple software update for your iPhone 18 Pro Max is available. Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately — Settings > General > Software Update. Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have questions."

Apple’s release notes for iOS 27.0.1 did not address the AT&T cellular issues, stating only that the update corrects a Face ID problem in the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Reports indicate that iPhone 18 Pro Max users are intermittently or persistently unable to make calls, send texts, or access data on AT&T's network, with some devices entering SOS mode. The cause of these issues is still unclear, and Apple has not issued a public statement regarding the matter.

Notably, the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only model launched last month that utilizes a Qualcomm cellular modem, while other models, including the international versions, feature Apple’s C2 modem. It is uncertain if this difference is contributing to the connectivity problems.

Should a software issue be confirmed, it may require another update, potentially iOS 27.0.2. However, if a hardware problem is to blame, it could present a more significant challenge. Updates will be provided as new information emerges.

Ironically, AT&T's alert about potential text messaging issues was communicated through a text message.
