Asteroid Day, celebrated annually on June 30, coincides with the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska event, when an asteroid exploded and devastated a vast area in Siberia. This event serves as a reminder of the necessity of planetary defense measures.

Looking ahead, scientists are preparing for an exciting decade of asteroid exploration, which includes the 2029 close flyby of the asteroid Apophis and missions aimed at studying the first asteroid humanity has successfully altered its trajectory.

Despite the progress, Remy pointed out a significant concern: many asteroids remain undiscovered. She emphasized the need to focus on the estimated 2.5 million near-Earth asteroids between 19 and 44 meters in size, of which only about 0.1% have been tracked. Furthermore, approximately 500,000 near-Earth asteroids measuring 44 to 140 meters, large enough to pose serious threats, have only 1% cataloged.

To tackle these challenges, Remy highlighted the limitations of conventional telescopes and the need for various search strategies tailored to different asteroid populations. Two major projects, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and NASA’s NEO Surveyor mission, are expected to enhance the detection of larger near-Earth asteroids.

While these missions will improve the tracking of larger bodies, Remy noted they will do little for smaller, more numerous objects. The B612 Foundation's Asteroid Discovery and Analysis (ADAM) Platform aims to aid in identifying and understanding these smaller celestial bodies.

In addition to discovering new asteroids, significant advancements have been made in calculating orbits and assessing potential risks, improving Earth’s asteroid warning systems. The U.S. Senate recently passed a bipartisan resolution recognizing Asteroid Day and its role in promoting planetary defense and scientific innovation.

Remy expressed hope that these developments inspire future generations of scientists and engineers, encouraging curiosity about asteroids not only as potential threats but also as significant contributors to understanding the solar system's origins. She aims to shift the narrative from fear to curiosity, with an exciting decade for asteroid exploration on the horizon, including upcoming missions to Apophis and detailed studies of Dimorphos, the target of NASA's DART mission.

Looking toward the future, Remy believes that private enterprises may also contribute to asteroid exploration, possibly setting the stage for long-term space exploration through resource extraction. Ultimately, she hopes to cultivate a fascination for asteroids among children everywhere.
